Oral History with Leah Kozlowicz, February 2020
Leah Kozlowicz attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Secondary School and is currently pursuing a degree from Laurier University. She describes the ways in which she first began to come to terms with being bisexual, specifically in reference to some television and movie characters. She also speaks to the difficulties of being bi and revealing her sexuality to her current boyfriend. She also mentions the general difficulties of coming out to her family who may find her sexuality as difficult to understand. Leah also speaks about the accepting friend group that she had during high school and the space that she took on with them.

Oral History with Lee Iskander, March 2020
Lee Iskander lived in Mississauga and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School. There, they were active in attempting to get queer and trans groups to be able to function within Catholic schools. Active with Gay-Straight-Alliances and Peel Pride, Lee continues to do work and research related to the LGBTQ+ community in Vancouver. Lee describes the ways in which they were active with other members of the community and spaces that they resorted to in order to meet. They describe Toronto as a place that seemed to possess more possibilities as they had a larger presence and influence on their activism work.

Oral History with Elio Colavito, February 2020
A native to Mississauga, Elio Colavito was raised in a Catholic household and attended Loyola Catholic Secondary School. They began to explore their sexuality 'early’ as they began dating women in the beginning of high school. Elio refers to some moments that were influential for their with reference to some movie and television characters. Elio studied political science and history at a university in the United States, where they got to ‘properly explore their sexuality’. They touch upon this monumental development and their realization that being accepted by those who matter is most important. Currently, Elio spends most of their time in Toronto as they work with The ArQuives, will frequent the bars downtown, and attends class at the St. George Campus.

Oral History with George Alevizos, February 2020
George Alevizos is a current graduate student from the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus who participated in the joint Sheridan program for theatre and drama studies. In his interview, George discusses his experience within the program itself, as well as his experiences of being out on campus. George also discusses the accessibility on campus, and the lack there of, and how that had affected his time while attending the university. George then expresses how there is a strong underrepresentation of disabled queers within the community, and it wasn’t until recently that there has been slightly more representation within the community.

Mackenzie Burton is a Brampton born UTM alumni breaking into the Theatre creation scene of the GTA. After graduation from the university’s theatre and drama specialist program, Mackenzie has found work acting and directing in the region of peel, and he brings his experience as a proud out gay man to his work, promoting representation, and the breaking of binary’s in theatre. Through discussions of what Mackenzie hopes to see in the future of this campus’ queer safe spaces, and some tricky navigations of how the performance of gender ties into actor training, this interview provides insight into the future of queer inclusion and initiatives.

Oral History with Arielle Kersey, February 2020
Arielle Kersey is a 2019 graduate of UTM, currently obtaining her Masters in English Literature at the University of British Columbia. She discussed her experience being queer in the UTM community, specifically while holding leadership positions, and how her advocation for the community came through in her work. She elaborates on her engagement both in and out of the classroom, as well as the nature of UTM’s various queer-inclusive initiatives. She remarks on the development of the queer community throughout her time at UTM, as well as acknowledging that the responsibility of inclusivity at UTM falls on the queer community itself, with little initiative taken by the majority.

Oral History with Gabriel Tran, February 2020.
Gabriel Tran is alumni from the University of Toronto, Mississauga after graduating with a double major in Anthropology and Biology. The interview includes subject matter relating to his understanding of the LGBTQ2+ presence within the Mississauga campus throughout the years of 2015-2019. Gabriel goes over his knowledge of LGBTQ2+ events among campus, the campus’ overall culture, his involvement on campus during his four years, and what he believes could be improved in years to come. Gabriel ends the interview by reflecting on his years of study.
