Description
In the mid to late ‘50s, Onofrio Ferlisi immigrated to Canada from Casteltermini of Agrigento, Sicily. In 1957, O. Ferlisi Supermarket was opened. With a mission to create a good life for his family post-immigration, he focused on the Southern Italian consumer with a “back home, small town feel” (Susie Ferlisi, 2021). They spoke in Italian in these grocery stores, creating a family atmosphere that “propagated that family life environment” (Ferlisi, 2021). Unfortunately, the last O. Ferlisi Supermarket closed in the 1990’s recession. This business was a founding member of the Italian-Canadian grocery industry as it helped create the “Italian brand” in Toronto.
